What are warts & verrucas?
Warts and verrucas are skin-coloured bumps made up of excess keratin, a hard protein, on the skin caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Most warts have a rough, irregular surface, resembling a cauliflower, but some are flat and smooth. Warts often develop on the fingers or on the back of the hands whereas verrucas occur only on the sole of the feet and underneath the toes. Both warts and verrucas are contagious.
